Local News in Brief : Scores Evacuate Mall Because of Fake Bomb
Detectives are investigating the source of a fake bomb that prompted police to evacuate 25 businesses Sunday in a Granada Hills shopping center, a Los Angeles police spokesman said Monday.
The bomb “was some kind of prop” that two men found in a trash can and briefly took along in their car before flagging down a police car about 6:30 p.m. at the shopping center, at Balboa and San Fernando Mission boulevards, Officer Bill Frio said.
The device resembled several sticks of dynamite wired to a timer. Officers from the police bomb squad were not sure it was fake until they destroyed it with a real explosive charge, Frio said.
Police spokesmen have described fake or toy bombs as a continuing nuisance that drains police resources.
