The Raiders have hired Sam Gruneisen, defensive coordinator and inside linebacker coach for the 1986 San Jose State football team, as their linebacker coach.
Gruneisen, 46, joined the San Jose State staff in February, 1986. He directed a defensive unit that finished second in the country in rushing defense (65.8 yards per game) and 27th in overall defense (313.7 yards per game) a year ago.
Gruneisen, who had a 12-year professional football career with the San Diego Chargers and Houston Oilers from 1962 through 1973, was an assistant coach for two seasons with the Los Angeles Express of the United States Football League before going to San Jose State.
