Los Angeles fire officials today determined that careless smoking caused a fire at a 14-story residential hotel late Monday night that caused minor injuries to two firefighters and five tenants. The blaze, which broke out in a third-floor room at the downtown Hayward Hotel, sent 100 people fleeing.

Eleven companies of firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 20 minutes. Two firefighters were treated for minor burns to their ears and necks, according to city fire spokesman Jim Williamson. Paramedics treated 10 residents for smoke inhalation, and five residents required hospitalization. Damage to the building and contents was estimated at $18,000, Williamson said.
