The only jet fuel pipeline at San Francisco International Airport was shut down after a power generator failed, bringing airport operations to a standstill and stranding passengers for up to three hours Tuesday. Officials said Chevron’s 24-inch pipeline was unable to pump jet fuel for two hours, 40 minutes, leaving the airport “virtually idle” with some airliners parked three deep at boarding gates. Some flights were diverted to other cities and still other San Francisco-bound flights were ordered to remain on the ground in other cities until they were assured of landing and parking space. Operations were expected to be back to normal today.
