A fire started by an electrical short caused damage estimated at $200,000 early Monday at a Mission Viejo restaurant.

A Sheriff’s Department patrolman reported the fire about 12:28 a.m. when he saw smoke coming from McConahay’s Old Place Restaurant, 28381 Marguerite Parkway, according to Patti Range, spokeswoman for the county Fire Department.

Damage to the building’s contents was estimated at $75,000. Structural damage, including smoke and window damage, was estimated at $125,000. The restaurant “wasn’t totally gutted inside,” Range said, adding that it took 30 firefighters 42 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
