1. Mater Dei and Woodbridge Are State Champions:

Mater Dei High School makes it look easy with a 69-51 victory over Ygnacio Valley of Concord to win the Division I boys’ basketball title in the Oakland Alameda Coliseum Arena. Woodbridge defeats De Anza, 89-63, for the Division II title, setting a tournament record for most points and tying the record for widest margin of victory.

2. El Toro’s Perfect Football Season:

The Chargers become the first county school to finish with a 14-0 record since Edison in 1980. El Toro caps its season by defeating Santa Ana, 26-10, for the Southern Conference championship.

3. Bolsa Grande Ends 27-Year Drought:

Junior quarterback Damon Fisher scores three touchdowns in a 24-7 victory over Valencia in the Central Conference title game. The championship is the first in the school’s 27-year history and avenges a 33-10 loss to Valencia in the season’s fifth week. Bolsa Grande finishes 13-1.

4. Todd Marinovich Sets County Passing Record:

Capistrano Valley’s junior quarterback surpasses former Newport Harbor star Shane Foley’s career passing total of 5,264 yards with a 146-yard performance against Saddleback, and he finished the season with 6,687. Marinovich returns next season, aiming for Pat Haden’s Southern Section career passing record of 7,633 yards.

5. The King of the Hill:

Softball pitcher Michele Granger of Valencia establishes national records for career no-hitters (27) and strikeouts (1,186) and still has another year remaining.

6. Troy Wins Baseball Title:

Troy High School wins the first Southern Section team championship in the school’s 25-year history when the Warriors defeat Arlington, 7-4, for the 3-A baseball title.

7. Carrie Egan, Cindy Vyskocil Set County Scoring Record:

Carrie Egan of Brea-Olinda scores 56 points in an Orange League basketball victory over Anaheim, to break by one the county single-game scoring record. Two weeks later, Cindy Vyskocil of Whittier Christian outdoes Egan, scoring 59 points in an Olympic League game against Capistrano Valley Christian.

8. Ted Mullen Moves to Anaheim:

Coach Ted Mullen was 59-15-2 in six football seasons at Foothill, winning the Southern Conference championship in 1981 and losing in the title game in 1983. With the move to Anaheim, Mullen, who also coached at Villa Park and University, becomes the first to coach four county football programs.
