Sports Briefs : Braves Sign Bell Catcher

Brian Wright, a catcher this season for Bell High School, has signed a contract with the Atlanta Braves and will report to Bradenton, Fla., in the Rookie League. As a senior, the left-handed hitting Wright batted .455 and had 5 home runs.

PCAA Moves Tourney

The Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. will switch its postseason basketball tournament from the Forum to the Long Beach Arena in 1989.

Speedsailing Saturday

America’s fastest boats will race Saturday off Long Beach in the U.S. Speedsailing Grand Prix. Spectators can watch the race aboard the Star, a 65-foot double-decker boat. Boarding begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Viscount Hotel and Marina dock, 700 Queensway Drive. Tickets are $17.50.

Walkin’ Willie Update

William (Walkin’ Willie) Croker of Hawaiian Gardens was in Davey Crockett, Tenn., Tuesday, continuing his walk across the country in support of cancer research. Croker is scheduled to arrive in Washington next Thursday and expects to meet with President Reagan.

Firemen’s Ice Hockey

The Southern California Blazers will play the San Francisco Flames in the 12th annual Firemen’s Hockey Championship June 28, June 29 and July 1 at the Iceland Arena, 8041 E. Jackson St., Paramount. The games will start at 7:30 p.m. and benefit the Alisa Ann Ruch California Burn Assn.

Slo-Pitch in Bell

A co-ed “C” and “D” summer slo-pitch softball league on Tuesday nights is being started by the Bell Department of Community Services. Registration is at the Community Services office, 6526 Wilcox Ave. Fee is $225 per team.
