About 18,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into San Marcos Creek and flowed into Batiquitos Lagoon after a sewer main broke near La Costa on Wednesday night, county health officials reported.

Crews were at work Thursday attempting to contain the spill, according Cheri Eir, spokeswoman for the county department of health services. “Keep out” signs have been posted in an 800-foot area surrounding parts of both the lagoon and creek, she said.

The water will be sampled daily, she said, until it is determined that it is safe for human contact.
