State Sen. Alan Robbins (D-Van Nuys) has appointed Donald P. Novack to the state Advisory Commission on Insurance Problems of Financial Institutions. Novack is chairman of the board of directors of the Executive Savings & Loan Assn. and president of Vistar Real Estate in Pacific Palisades.

William R. Stevenson has been appointed by Gov. George Deukmejian to the board of governors for the California Auctioneer Commission. Stevenson is president of Santa Monica-based Kennedy-Wilson Inc.

Leslee (Jerry) Reed and Jesse Rodriguez have received community recognition awards from the West Los Angeles Coordinating Council. Reed was honored for her contributions as a Los Angeles teacher for 30 years and for her efforts to help the homeless. Rodriguez, who recently retired as head gardener at Santa Monica High School, was cited for his volunteer service with youth organizations.

Rabbi Yisroel Kelemer has been named spiritual leader of Congregation Mogen David, 9717 W. Pico Blvd. He was associated with Judea Congregation, Beth Jacob Congregation of Beverly Hills and Kenesseth Israel Congregation of Beverlywood.

Dick Israel has been reelected to a second term as president of the North Beverly-Franklin Canyon Drives Homeowners Assn., representing about 200 homes. Israel, an investment banker, said the association was formed to deal primarily with local hillside problems.

Tina Gittelson has been reelected to a third term as secretary of the board of directors of the United Cerebral Palsy/Spastic Children’s Foundation of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Gittelson is vice president of Sheffield Furniture Corp. in Vernon.

UCLA associate professor Noreen Webb has been awarded the Raymond B. Cattell Early Career Award for Programmatic Research by the American Educational Research Assn. She received the award for her work on peer interaction and research on classroom learning in small-group settings.

The John Joseph Swim Scholarship has been established at Santa Monica College to honor the college’s long-time swimming coach. Former swimmers, divers and friends of Joseph’s raised more than $9,000 to set up the scholarship in his name. Joseph was also recently elected statewide community college “1987 Swim Coach of the Year.”

Nathan H. Shapira, UCLA associate professor of design, has received the 1987 achievement award for economic development from Italy’s Udine province. The award was presented to Shapira for his efforts to promote Italian design and culture in the United States, culminating in the exhibition “The Quest for Continuity: Forms From Friuli.” The exhibition was presented at the Craft and Folk Art Museum this spring and was featured on Italian national television in May.

Pacific Palisades resident Mark C. Levy has received the Leo Hirsh/Hy Altman Leadership Award. The award was established last year by the Jewish Federation Council’s Western Region in memory of Hirsh and Altman, who were former presidents. Levy has been an active volunteer in the Jewish community for nearly 40 years.

UCLA faculty members George Siscoe and Paul Roberts are among 20 international scientists named as 1987 fellows of the American Geophysical Union. Siscoe is professor and chairman of the department of atmospheric sciences, and Roberts is a professor of mathematics who joined UCLA last year from the University of Newcastle in England.

Westchester resident Martha Choi has been honored by the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA for her volunteer work for the past 17 years with the Westchester YMCA. Her named was entered into the Golden Book of Distinguished Service, the associations’s highest award.

Curtis N. Sandberg, son of Dr. and Mrs. Neil Sandberg of West Los Angeles, has been awarded a Fulbright grant for graduate studies in Italy. Sandberg is a teaching fellow at Harvard University.

Ray Bradbury, honorary mayor of Rancho Park, will be the installing officer when Dr. Martin Prince is seated as the new president of the Greater Rancho Park Chamber of Commerce on June 26 at the Velvet Turtle restaurant.

Beverly Hills resident Vicki Wolf has been elected president of Westside Jewish Community Center, 5870 W. Olympic Blvd.
