Downey : Pay Raises Go Into Effect

Share

Pay raises went into effect this week for Downey city employees. They range from 3.5% for management staff members to 4% for other employees. The two-year agreements approved by the City Council with the Downey Police Officers Assn. and the Downey City Employees Assn. also provide pay raises of 5% and 4%, respectively, in July, 1988.

The agreement with the Police Officers Assn. provides for an additional 1% salary increase in January, 1989, and establishes a city-sponsored medical plan for retired police officers. A medical plan for retired non-management employees will be established next year under the agreement with the City Employees Assn.

The City Employees Assn. represents 115 non-management workers, while the Police Officers Assn. represents 104 sworn police employees.

The city’s 33 management employees will receive long-term disability insurance in lieu of the .5% raise other city employees received this year. General management and police management also will receive 4% and 5% raises, respectively, in July, 1988.

The raises and new benefits will cost the city $531,000 in 1987-88, and $552,000 in 1988-89, said Lee Powell, director of administrative services.
