Fifty-one people were killed on the state’s roads over the 3-day July Fourth holiday weekend, the California Highway Patrol said. That compares with 47 deaths during the the same period last year. The CHP also said it made 1,964 drunk-driving arrests over the holiday, which began at 6 p.m. Thursday. That compares with 2,067 such arrests in 1986.
