Kirk Accused of Overcharging Youngsters at Camp

Former Memphis State basketball coach Dana Kirk, indicted on income-tax evasion charges, is now accused of overcharging youngsters and coaches at his summer basketball camps.

A government motion filed Monday in U.S. District Court claimed Kirk sold soft drinks to youngsters at the camp for $1, even though they were donated by Coca-Cola.

The motion also claims Kirk marked up other concession items at the camp by as much as 100%, kept $2,000 for himself that was intended for two former assistant coaches and used about $1,500 from camp funds to cover gambling debts.

The accusations were part of a motion filed by U.S. Attorney Hickman Ewing Jr. The court document is in response to Kirk’s motion that the indictment against him be dismissed.

Kirk maintains his innocence and claims he was singled out for prosecution while his former assistants, Lee Fowler and Larry Finch, were not indicted. Finch is now the school’s basketball coach.
