Competition will feature 128 surfers, including Scott Daley of El Segundo and and Chris Wells of Manhattan Beach, 36 long-boarders and a body-board event that will include tour leader Mike Stewart and defending champ Keith Sasaki. The 16 top-rated men’s surfers are seeded in the main event, earning an opening-round bye. Surfing starts each morning at 7. Finals begin at about noon Sunday.

The Japanese men’s national basketball team will play Saturday and Monday at Cal State Dominguez Hills against pickup teams of local college and pro players in preparation for international play and Olympic qualification. The Japanese are advised by former U.S. Olympic Coach Pete Newell and Dominguez Hills Coach Dave Yanai. The 7:30 p.m. games feature NBA star Kiki Vandeweghe and the Toros’ William Alexander. The Japanese are preparing for the Jones Cup and Asian Games tournaments, which will determine qualifiers for the 1988 Olympics.
