Downey : Boggs to Serve as Mayor

The Downey City Council chose Councilwoman Diane P. Boggs to succeed Councilman James S. Santangelo as mayor for the next year. Councilman Robert G. Cormack was named mayor pro tem.

It is the first time the Boggs, 54, an administrator at a Norwalk weight-control clinic, has held the largely ceremonial post. She was elected to the City Council in 1984 and served as mayor pro tem the past year.

Santangelo, who also was elected to the council in 1984, concluded his first term as mayor when the gavel was passed during a ceremony Tuesday evening.

Cormack, who was first elected in 1980, served as mayor from July, 1983, to July, 1984. The mayor pro tem is in line to become mayor the following year.

The mayor’s main task is to preside at council meetings. The mayor receives $390 a month for expenses, while a council member receives $330.
