Mark McCumber, opening with two birdies and an eagle, shot a six-under-par 65 Thursday to share the opening-round lead with Tom Sieckmann in the $612,000 Anheuser-Busch golf tournament at Williamsburg, Va.

Veteran Dave Eichelberger made a hole-in-one on the par-3 fifth hole to join Jack Renner, Ron Streck, Fred Wadsworth and John Cook one stroke behind the leaders on the 6,776-yard course at Kingsmill Golf Club.

Eichelberger, 43, a touring pro since 1967 and whose last victory came in the 1981 Tallahassee Open, used a 6-iron on the 183-yard hole to drive the ball within five feet, then watched it trickle in.

McCumber, 35, is seeking his fifth PGA Tour victory but has had just two top-10 finishes in the past two years. Sieckmann, 32, missed the cut in 13 of 19 tournaments this year but matched his best round of 1987 with six birdies.

John Mahaffey, who won this tournament in 1981, was among six golfers at 67.

Scott Simpson, playing his first round since winning the U.S. Open three weeks ago, shot a 71.

Ayako Okamoto of Japan, returning from a two-week layoff, shot a seven-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead in the first round of the $400,000 du Maurier tournament at Laval, Canada.

Okamoto, a three-time winner on the LPGA Tour this year, made 10 birdies en route to tying the course record at the 6,371-yard Islesmere Golf Club, 10 miles north of Montreal.

Shirley Furlong of San Antonio shot a career-best 66 for second place, and Missie McGeorge was at 67. Lynn Adams, Jody Rosenthal, Penny Hammel and Jill Briles were at 68. Pat Bradley, seeking her third straight du Maurier title, was tied with Janice Gibson and Kathy Postlewait at 69.

Gordon Jones, little known after 30 years in professional golf, and Peter Thomson, trying to rebound from a difficult year, shot five-under-par 66s to share a one-stroke lead in the first round of the U.S. Senior Open at Fairfield, Conn.

Former NFL quarterback John Brodie was at 67, while Chi Chi Rodriguez, Doug Sanders, Larry Mowry and Gene Borek were at 68.

Seven players, including Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, were at 69.

Charles Owens, playing to protest a United States Golf Assn. rule forbidding the use of golf carts, withdrew after shooting a one-over-par 37 on the front nine, saying he could no longer walk the hilly, 6,599-yard Brooklawn Country Club course. Owens has a variety of lower body ailments, including a fused left knee.

Ian Woosnam of Wales shot his second straight six-under-par 65 to take a two-stroke lead after two rounds of the Scottish Open at Gleneagles, Scotland.

Woosnam was at 130. Roger Chapman, the former English Amateur champion, shot a 64 and was at 132. Another stroke back was Spain’s Severiano Ballesteros, who had a 65.
