McEnroe Is Coming Back to Play Davis Cup for U.S.
Five players, including John McEnroe, were named to the U.S. Davis Cup team that will meet West Germany July 24-26 in a relegation match at Hartford, Conn.
McEnroe, who was denied Davis Cup consideration for the last two years by Randy Gregson, former president of the U.S. Tennis Assn., last represented the United States in the 1984 final against Sweden.
This will also be McEnroe’s first match since he lost in the opening round of the French Open in May. Injuries forced him to miss Wimbledon. Davis Cup captain Tom Gorman also named Tim Mayotte, Paul Annacone, Ken Flach and Robert Seguso to the squad.
“John’s Wimbledon injury has been taken care of,” Gorman said. “He’s been working out, and he’s ready to come to Hartford.”
West Germany, which hasn’t announced its team, is expected to bring Boris Becker, Eric Jelen and, possibly, Michael Westphal to Hartford. The competition could swing with the doubles match, and Gorman has reason for confidence as Flach and Seguso won Wimbledon last weekend.
