Joe Henderson scored five goals to lead the Los Angeles Colts to a 12-11 win over the San Francisco Buccaneers in the American Polo League championship game Saturday night at the L.A. Equestrian Center in Burbank.

The Colts, who trailed 3-0 under the league’s handicapping system before the match began, caught the Bucs at 7-7 in the third of six chukkers.

Henderson scored two goals in fourth chukker as Los Angeles took a 9-7 lead.

San Francisco came back to tie the match, 9-9, and the teams traded goals to create an 11-11 standoff with just more than a minute remaining in the match. The Colts’ Ronnie Tongg then was awarded the game-winning goal when he was fouled as he attempted to shoot in front of the San Francisco goal. The penalty awarded the goal and championship to the Colts.

“They played beautifully, but luck was with us and we were able to hold it together in the last minute,” Colts captain Tom Goodspeed said.
