Fifth-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden needed only 59 minutes to defeat Tony Mmoh of Nigeria, 6-0, 6-2, and move into the third round of the U.S. Open Clay Court tournament Tuesday night at Indianapolis.

He won the opening set in 23 minutes.

Nystrom, the highest-seeded player in action on the second day of the tournament, became the only player to reach the third round. He had a first-round bye.

Action was heavy Tuesday, the result of rains Monday that postponed 15 of 20 scheduled matches.

In afternoon matches Tuesday, ninth-seeded Jay Berger advanced to the second round, but two other former collegians, Patrick McEnroe and Luke Jensen, were eliminated.

Berger, former Clemson star, rallied to beat Claudio Panatta of Italy, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, in a match that was halted Monday by rain.

However, John McEnroe’s younger brother, Patrick, who played for Stanford, lost to Tom Nijssen of the Netherlands, 6-4, 6-4, and Jensen, formerly of USC, fell to Dan Cassidy, 6-1, 6-0.

Unseeded players advancing included two more former collegians, Blaine Willenborg and Richey Reneberg.

Willenborg, from UCLA, defeated Martin Wostenholme of Canada, 6-1, 6-0, and Reneberg, from SMU, ousted Pablo Arraya of Peru, 6-2, 6-3.

At Newport, R.I., defending champion Pam Shriver routed Kathy Jordan, 6-3, 6-0, to advance to the second round of a $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament.

At Stuttgart, West Germany, second-seeded Henri Leconte of France struggled into the second round of the $231,000 Mercedes Cup tournament with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Francisco Yunis of Argentina.

Heavy rains interrupted second-day action in a $125,000 tournament at Livingston, N.J., with second-seeded Wally Masur of Australia leading Jeff Tarango of Manhattan Beach, 6-2, 3-4.
