WICHITA, Kan. —
Cathy Mockett of Newport Beach won a 19-hole match Tuesday over Kathleen McCarthy of Fresno in the first day of the Trans National golf tournament.
Mockett, a former U.S. junior champion, was four under par and 3-up with only three holes to go. She then bogeyed 16 and 17, and McCarthy holed out a 25-foot trap shot on 18 to send the match into extra holes.
Mockett went on to win 1-up on 19 to oust McCarthy, a Curtis Cupper and Western Amateur champion.
