The Philadelphia Phillies have sent right-handed pitcher Joe Cowley home for the rest of the season because of control problems, team president Bill Giles said.

Cowley was acquired by the Phillies March 26 in a deal that sent outfielder Gary Redus to the Chicago White Sox. The Phillies had hoped to make him their fifth starter, but he got off to a dismal start and ended up with the Phillies’ Triple-A Maine Guides.

Giles said Cowley has been working with a psychiatrist for more than a month to overcome a mental block.
