Pernell Whitaker stopped Miguel Santana at 1:10 of the sixth round to win the United States Boxing Assn. lightweight championship at Norfolk, Va.
Whitaker, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist, was in control from the opening bell, dropping Santana twice in the second round and keeping him off balance throughout the match.
Whitaker (14-0) adds the USBA title to the North American Boxing Federation lightweight title he already holds. Santana, of San Juan, P.R., is 21-2.
