Members of the Soviet Union national basketball team will arrive in the United States this week for a series of scrimmages and training sessions with National Basketball Assn. players in preparation for an international exhibition tournament.
The six Soviet players and two coaches will train in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Seattle before returning home. They will be back in October to play against American and Italian teams in the McDonald’s Basketball Open at Milwaukee.
The scrimmages will mark the first time Soviet and American basketball players have played together rather than against each other. Three of the Soviet players have been drafted by NBA teams. They are Sharunas Marchulenis, a 6-foot 4-inch guard picked by Golden State; Valeri Tikhonenko, a 6-9 forward, and Aleksandr Volkov, a 6-9 forward, both selected by Atlanta.
