A Fitting Thank-You

Some people express their gratitude with flowers. But Ron Herman, owner of Fred Segal on Melrose Avenue, says it with T-shirts. On a recent Saturday, the Segal sales force gave away 5,000 shirts designed by Los Angeles artist Michael Stars. “It was our way of creating some excitement and saying thank-you for coming into the store,” menswear manager George Grimball tells Listen. The red-white-and-blue good-will gestures were given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Among the early takers were Lionel Richie, Duane Allen of the Oakridge Boys and former Mr. Universe, Mike Christian.

Wedding Belles

The bride wanted “something romantic, not completely traditional and not overpowering,” Hollywood costume designer Robert Turturice tells Listen. The mother of the bride, who is also a friend of the designer, put in a request for a comfortable, summery lavender dress. Turturice, known for his “Moonlighting” costumes, filled the bill with a silk-satin “1890s period look” for bride Deidra Bikel and layers of lavender silk georgette for her mother, actress Loni Anderson. Bikel, who recently earned a teaching credential, was married earlier this month in Westwood to Charles Sumner Hoffman IV. “It was an intimate sort of wedding,” Turturice reports. Spotted among the guests were Burt Reynolds, Lynda Carter, actor-director Charles Nelson Reilly and Ricardo Montalban. Anderson, it seems, left no stone unturned finding the right accessories for the occasion. “She searched all over town until she found the perfect thing: custom-made lavender jade jewelry,” Turturice informs us.

Taylor’s Public ‘Passion’

After all these years, Elizabeth Taylor is again trying her hand as a matinee queen. At 2 on the afternoon of Sept. 14, she’s opening with Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion. Whatever it is about her, she’s bottled it for this performance. Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion is the actress’ signature perfume, and she’ll introduce it at Robinson’s in Beverly Hills at $25 to $200 a bottle. “Passion evokes emotion, exudes intensity, reflects mystery,” she recently purred to Robinson’s public relations people. She’ll be available to answer questions from fans at the September introduction.

Ooh La La L.A.

To celebrate her first anniversary in Los Angeles, French designer Catherine Marlet threw a party at her Melrose Avenue boutique. But one special customer was an understandable no-show: Brigitte Bardot. Marlet decorated Bardot’s houses in Paris and St. Tropez 20 years ago and says Bardot has been a devotee of her designs ever since. But these days the film star’s mind is more on animal activism than fashion. “She mainly wears jeans and T-shirts,” explains Marlet. In the meantime, Marlet has become totally enamored of the libre (free) L.A. life style. She reports that she is now working on ideas for 10 “not ordinary” T-shirts and more sweat shirts.
