San Diego Beats L.A. All-Stars on Late Score

Share

The San Diego Section All-Star high school football team was accused of being boisterous and messy earlier this week by the Marine Corps.

But it was that kind of behavior that helped the San Diego All-Stars to a 26-19 victory Saturday over the Los Angeles City Section at the Aztec Bowl.

Earlier this week, San Diego was evicted from its living quarters at the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot because the Marines could not control the team. The Los Angeles City squad’s luck was no better Saturday night.

With 2:43 left in the game, quarterback Maurice Jackson of Madison High connected with Johnny Ace of Valhalla on a 49-yard touchdown play to put San Diego ahead for good, 26-19.

San Diego rushed to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter, benefiting from three Los Angeles fumbles.

Los Angeles scored its first touchdown with 10:55 to play in the first half when Ed Kapu hit Marc Rodgers (University) on a 16-yarder. The drive, however, was not spectacular. San Diego committed 30 yards in penalties.

Midway through the fourth period Los Angeles capped a 41-yard drive when Edwin Jones of Kennedy High in Granada Hills rushed for a touchdown from the six-yard line, closing San Diego’s lead to 19-13.

With 5:13 remaining, Archie Jean returned a San Diego punt 89 yards to tie the game, 19-19.
