A 60-year-old driver was killed and his three passengers were injured when their car ran off a freeway transition road early Friday, the California Highway Patrol said.

A coroner’s spokesman identified the dead man as William A. Carnes of Hemet. CHP spokesman Paul Caldwell said the driver and his passengers were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the car.

The accident occurred at 2:10 a.m. on the eastbound Garden Grove Freeway transition road to the southbound Costa Mesa Freeway. The car was traveling about 45 m.p.h. to 50 m.p.h., Caldwell said.

The transition road makes a right turn, but Carnes’ car continued straight ahead and part way down an embankment, where it overturned. The three passengers were thrown clear, but the driver was crushed beneath the vehicle, Caldwell said.

Carnes was declared dead at the scene.
