Two roads were closed and several law enforcement agencies were called to help look for a suspect in the stadium area Tuesday afternoon after a California Highway Patrol officer reported that his car window was shattered by what he believed was a gunshot, authorities said.

It was later determined that a rock had crashed through the right rear window of CHP Officer Tim Helmer’s car, CHP spokesman Herb Langford said.

Helmer was driving north on Stadium Way near Friars Road on routine duty about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday when he heard a loud noise, and was then showered with glass, according to Langford.

Langford said the rock must either have been thrown or “shot with something like a slingshot” because it hit the window with such force.

Sections of Stadium Way and Friars Road were closed to traffic for about 35 minutes while CHP, San Diego police and San Diego County sheriff’s officers searched the area. No suspects were found, Langford said.
