Man Caught at SDSU After Del Cerro Shooting

Share

A 21-year-old San Carlos man, distraught over a dispute with his girlfriend, fired a shotgun inside her Del Cerro home Saturday before being cornered and arrested two hours later by San Diego Police Department SWAT officers at a San Diego State University parking lot.

There were no injuries in the incident, but eastbound traffic on Interstate 8 near College Avenue was blocked for more than two hours until the man was arrested.

Police were holding the man, identified as John Paul Killian, on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon and false imprisonment, Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Police reported that he fired several shotgun rounds at a telephone inside his girlfriend’s home in the 8600 block of Verlane Drive after arguing with his girlfriend’s mother, Robinson said. He had driven to the home after an argument with the girlfriend, who was not home at the time of the shooting.

Killian then allegedly fired toward at least one unoccupied, parked vehicle in the area before driving to a parking lot on the SDSU campus, just south of Interstate 8, where he was cornered by university police.

“What will it take to get you to shoot me?” university police quoted Killian as remarking during the standoff.

At one point, officers shot out one of his vehicle’s tires to prevent his escape.

SWAT officers surrounded the area while officers tried to talk Killian into giving himself up.

Finally, officers detonated a flash grenade to distract the suspect, who was then captured without further incident.

Inside his car police recovered two weapons--a 12-gauge shotgun and a loaded AR-15 automatic weapon.
