Mark Collingsworth, a freshman from San Marcos High School, kicked a 35-yard field goal as time ran out to give Occidental College a 13-13 tie with the University of San Diego in the Division III teams’ college football opener Saturday at Los Angeles.

Collingsworth’s kick capped a 12-play, 56-yard drive after USD had taken a 13-10 lead on Brendan Murphy’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Todd Jackson with just more than two minutes remaining.

Murphy had replaced USD starter Braulio Castillo, who left early in the fourth quarter after fumbling twice. In the first half, Castillo had led a strong USD running game and helped the Toreros to a 7-0 halftime lead.

Castillo passed only twice in the first half, completing one. Most of the time, he handed off to Jackson, who finished with 126 yards rushing in 24 carries. Castillo scored USD’s first touchdown on a nine-yard run.

Occidental didn’t score until Collingsworth kicked a 21-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers went ahead, 10-7, on an 8-yard touchdown run by quarterback Mark Krajnik.

USD regained the lead as Murphy completed three passes, including the pass on the scoring play. Occidental moved down field on three passes from Krajnik to Jeff Bedell to set up Collingsworth for his game-tying kick.
