CIF Repeals Rule That Limits Number of School Soccer Players on Club Teams

A rule that limited the number of high school soccer players who could compete together on club teams was repealed Thursday by the California Interscholastic Federation’s Federated Council.

The state council, meeting at Oakland, voted to repeal a Southern Section rule that limited to five the number of soccer players from the same high school who can play together on a club team.

The rule had been challenged last July by the Brea Soccer Assn., which appealed it to Tom Byrnes, CIF commissioner. On July 31, Byrnes issued a temporary stay against the rule, the day before the club season started. The stay was issued until the council met today.

Byrnes contended in July that the rule may conflict with a state rule that states it is permissible for a student on a high school soccer team to compete on an “outside” team except during the season, Nov. 15 to March 15.
