Share

Quarterback David Chisum ignited a 21-point second quarter with three touchdown passes to lead Sunny Hills High School to a 35-10 victory Friday over Cypress at Spaulding Field in Buena Park.

Chisum, a 6-foot 2-inch senior, broke open a scoreless game midway through the second quarter when he connected with wide receiver John Dysart on a 42-yard touchdown pass. Carlos Miramontes added the extra point to put the Lancers ahead, 7-0.

After a Cypress punt, Chisum again went to the air and found Gene Schutt for a 43-yard touchdown pass to culminate a four-play, 80-yard drive with 2:25 left in the first half.

Seconds later, Sunny Hills made its halftime lead 21-0 when Chisum completed a second-quarter hat trick with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Dysart. The touchdown was set up two plays earlier when Centurian quarterback Pete Bopulos fumbled and Kevin Sharp recovered for Sunny Hills on Cypress’ 21-yard line.

“David was just on tonight,” said Sunny Hills Coach Tim Devaney. “Cypress played really well in the first half and shut down our running game, so we had to go to the air. He (Chisum) threw some excellent passes, and our receivers made some nice catches.”

Chisum completed 14 of 17 passes for 247 yards, including 3 touchdowns.
