County : Separate Accidents Kill Four on Area Roads

Four people were killed Friday night and Saturday morning in accidents on area roads, including a driver who crossed four lanes of the San Diego Freeway and crashed into a palm tree.

The California Highway Patrol said Tam Phan, 26, of Santa Ana, was killed just before midnight when his car went over the side of the northbound San Diego Freeway just north of Seal Beach Boulevard and hit a tree. A passenger, Tam Nguyen, 20, of Santa Ana, was injured.

Roger Jacobs, 22, of Westminster, also was killed when the car he was riding in crashed into a tree near Live Oak Canyon Road near Rancho Santa Margarita on Saturday morning. The driver, Derek Bemiss, 21, of Huntington Beach, was injured.

In another accident Saturday morning, Michael Flores, 16, of Irvine, was killed when he was thrown from the car in which he was riding after it went off Jeffrey Road north of Irvine, authorities said.

Ruth Matheisl, 30, of Marina del Rey, was killed Saturday morning when another car rear-ended the one in which she was riding. The Matheisl car was either stopped or moving very slowly when it was hit on the San Diego Freeway north of Avery Parkway, authorities said.
