ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Fisher and Lui Lead Bolsa Grande Rout

Share

Bolsa Grande High School Coach Greg Shadid was worried about his team being tentative in its game against Savanna. That certainly wasn’t the case as the Matadors shut out the Rebels, 54-0.

Substitute quarterback Damon Fisher rushed for 144 yards and scored 3 touchdowns on runs of 16, 64 and 23 yards, and Travin Lui gained 232 yards and scored on runs of 79 and 3 yards.

Things didn’t start off well for Bolsa Grande (3-0). The Rebels (0-3) took the opening kickoff and drove 77 yards to the Matador three-yard line. But the drive stalled and Rebel Robbie Hynes missed a 20-yard field goal attempt.

“We talked to our guys about being complacent and they were on that first drive,” Shadid said. “Our defensive coaches got on them right away and solved the problem.”

Bolsa Grande scored twice later in the first quarter--on Fischer’s 16-yard run and Ricky Lepule’s nine-yard run after a fumble recovery.

The Matadors attempted only five passes. Shannon Valdez and Danny Jimenez scored Bolsa Grande’s other touchdowns on runs of 19 and 2 yards, respectively.

With backup quarterback Brian Nuez sidelined with a leg injury, Shadid moved Lui to quarterback in the third quarter. The senior running back had taken only eight snaps before Saturday’s game.

“He did a good job,” Shadid said. “We’ve only got four running backs and we have to make do with what we’ve got.”

Bolsa Grande was hampered by penalties throughout the game (13 for 120 yards) and had three touchdowns called back as a result.
