Far West Roundup : Wyoming Slams the Door on Iowa State

Fullback Gerald Abraham rushed for a career-high 138 yards and scored twice Saturday as Wyoming shut out Iowa State in the second half en route to a 34-17 victory at Laramie, Wyo.

Iowa State (0-3) held a 17-7 lead, but Wyoming (2-2) closed to 17-14 on Abraham’s one-yard dive with 1:05 left in the half. Greg Worker’s 43-yard field goal 28 seconds before halftime tied the game.

The Cowboys went ahead, 20-17, early in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard field goal by Worker, and then, 27-17, on a 49-yard run by Abraham.

Air Force 27, Colorado St. 19--Sophomore quarterback Dee Dowis ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as the Falcons scored on five straight possessions to erase a 13-0 deficit in a Western Athletic Conference game at Fort Collins, Colo.

Fullback Andy Smith carried 29 times for 134 yards, and Dowis added 97 yards in 20 carries for the Falcons, 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the WAC. The loss dropped CSU to 0-4 and 0-2.

BYU 45, New Mexico 25--Quarterback Bob Jensen threw for 365 yards at Albuquerque, N.M., as the Cougars evened their record at 2-2 in their WAC opener.

New Mexico, with quarterback Barry Garrison throwing for 368 yards, is 0-4 overall, 0-2 in the conference.

Utah 51, Idaho St. 16--Chris Mendonca and Scott Mitchell combined for 362 yards and 3 touchdowns for Utah (3-1) at Salt Lake City. Mendonca connected on 22 of 33 passes for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Mitchell completed 13 of 19 attempts for 143 yards and a touchdown.

Texas El Paso 37, Hawaii 13--John Harvey, who rushed for 145 yards in 24 attempts, scored on runs of 49, 26 and 1 yard at El Paso, Tex., as the Miners won their fifth game in a row.

Angelo State 21, New Mexico St. 17--Quarterback Mike Russell passed for one touchdown and ran for another to lead Angelo State (3-1) over New Mexico State (1-2) at Las Cruces, N.M.
