Former World Boxing Assn. heavyweight champion Tony Tubbs scored a third-round technical knockout over Eddie Gonzales Tuesday night in the main event of the boxing program at the Celebrity Theater in Anaheim in front of an estimated crowd of 1,400.

Gonzales (29-6) came out of his corner and was unable to start the fourth round because of a possible broken jam. He was examined between rounds by the ring-side doctor, who stopped the fight.

Tubbs (26-1) landed several strong combinations in the three rounds but wasn’t sure which punch did the damage to Gonzales’ jaw.

“I caught him with a few good good uppercuts so that might have done it,” Tubbs said. “I also hit him flush with a couple of rights in the third round so that might have done it also.”

Tubbs took control of the fight from the start, scoring with a series of left jabs early in the first round.

In the second round he concentrated on Gonzales’ body, keeping him trapped on the ropes for most of the round.

In the third, Gonzales scored early with a quick flurry of rights but was again trapped on the ropes for the final two minutes of the round.
