COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Scoreless, Helpless Columbia Ties Record With 34th Straight Loss, 23-0
NEW YORK — Jim Grass kicked three field goals, and Chris Flynn scored two touchdowns Saturday to give Penn a 23-0 victory over Columbia in an Ivy League game, sending the Lions to a record-tying 34th straight defeat.
Columbia (0-3 overall, 0-2 in the Ivy League) matched the major college record for successive losses set from 1979 to 1982 by Northwestern.
The Lions, who have not won in their last 37 games, including two ties, can break the record for consecutive losses next Saturday in an Ivy League game at Princeton.
Grass kicked a field goal in each of the first three quarters, from 43, 42 and 33 yards, giving the Quakers (1-2, 1-1) a 9-0 lead.
After Eric Poderys recovered a fumble at the Columbia three, Flynn scored on the next play to break it open.
Columbia has been held scoreless twice this season and has been outscored, 96-7. The Lions have been blanked four times in their last six games.
The Lions have not won since Oct. 15, 1983, when they beat Yale, 21-18, at New Haven, Conn., and have lost all 19 games played in its new stadium, opened in 1984.
