Television Viewers Aren’t Turned Off by the NFL Strike

Share

Put any kind of National Football League game on television and apparently people will watch it.

Although attendance figures for Sunday’s strike-replacement games were way down, the overnight Nielsen television ratings held up pretty well and were far better than those for major league baseball.

In Los Angeles, the rating for the Ram-New Orleans game on CBS was 14.1, and the Miami-Seattle game on NBC did a 10.1. The division-deciding Toronto-Detroit American League baseball game on ABC drew a 7.6, and the Dodgers and San Diego Padres on Channel 11 had a 3.7.

In the nation’s 15 largest markets, NBC averaged an 11.7 for NFL football. Two weeks ago, before the strike, it averaged a 12.9.

In the same markets, CBS drew average overnight ratings of 15.0 and 10.8 for its NFL doubleheader Sunday. Two weeks ago, CBS got ratings of 18.5 and 21.3 for a doubleheader.

Sunday’s Toronto-Detroit baseball game on ABC averaged a 5.9 in the nation’s 15 largest markets.

National ratings won’t be available until later in the week.
