Neither football star Napoleon McCallum nor basketball standout David Robinson received preferential treatment in their assignments after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, the General Accounting Office said.
McCallum played for the Raiders last year after being assigned to a ship in Long Beach. Robinson, a seven-footer who graduated from the academy last May, will be eligible to play professional basketball in two years, after getting three years knocked off his active duty requirement.
The GAO determined that since Naval officers generally are assigned where they want to go, the Navy made no special exception in granting McCallum’s request to go to Long Beach.
As for Robinson, the GAO said that a compromise was made between Naval officials and the midshipman after he was led to believe that his height would exempt him from active duty altogether.
