COLLEGE FOOTBALL : East Roundup : Thomas and Knizner Lead No. 14 Penn St. Past Rutgers, 35-21

Blair Thomas surpassed 100 yards rushing for the fourth straight week and scored 3 touchdowns as 14th-ranked Penn State beat Rutgers, 35-21, Saturday at University Park, Pa.

Thomas, the nation’s eighth-leading rusher, gained 116 yards in 20 carries as Penn State improved to 5-1. Thomas scored on runs of 9, 3 and 13 yards, and John Greene added a 4-yard touchdown run as the Nittany Lions beat the Scarlet Knights for the 15th straight time.

Penn State quarterback Matt Knizner completed 16 of 25 passes for 215 yards, all career highs, and put the game out of reach when he teamed up with Ray Roundtree on a 39-yard touchdown pass play with 13:01 left.

It was a homecoming for Rutgers Coach Dick Anderson, who graduated from Penn State in 1963.

Rutgers slipped to 3-2 despite Scott Erney completing 32 of 55 passes for 346 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The victory vaulted Penn State Coach Joe Paterno into seventh place on the all-time victory list with 204.

Boston College 29, Army 24--Reserve quarterback Mark Kamphaus passed to Darren Flutie on a 20-yard scoring play in the fourth quarter, and the heavily favored Eagles held on for a victory over the Cadets at Newton, Mass.

Third-stringer Bryan Babb, making his first start, ran for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns for Army (2-3).

The Eagles are 4-2.

Mike Power, who beat out Kamphaus for the starting job in preseason practice, completed 13 of 19 passes for 178 yards and 1 touchdown before taking a breather early in the fourth quarter.

Kamphaus made the most of his opportunity, leading the Eagles on an 80-yard drive, with his scoring pass to Flutie giving Boston College a 29-17 lead with a little more than 8 minutes remaining.

But the Cadets scored on a 10-yard run by Babb to make it 29-24, and then got one more chance, driving to the Eagle 26 before time ran out.

Tulsa 24, Temple 17--Freshman quarterback T.J. Rubley and a surprisingly tenacious defense led the Golden Hurricane to an upset over the Owls at Philadelphia.

Rubley completed 18 of 35 passes for 278 yards and 3 touchdowns.

On defense, the Golden Hurricane (2-4) blocked two field goal attempts and stopped seven Temple drives deep in Tulsa territory. Tulsa’s defense, which had been allowing more than 42 points a game, also had 5 sacks and Eric Barrs had a 49-yard pass interception return.

Temple’s Todd McNair gained 167 yards in 30 carries and scored both of the Owls’ touchdowns on runs of 3 and 4 yards.

Air Force 23, Navy 13--A 23-yard scoring run by fullback Andy Smith and a 32-yard field goal by Steve Yarbrough late in the fourth quarter gave the heavily favored Falcons a victory at Annapolis, Md.

Navy’s upset hopes ended with 2:28 left in the game when freshman quarterback Alton Grizzard was sacked by the right side of the Air Force line on a fourth-and-one carry at the Falcon 42.

Air Force (5-1) quickly put the game out of reach with Yarbrough’s third field goal of the game. Navy is 0-5.

Penn 38, Brown 17--The five-time defending Ivy League champion Quakers scored 38 second-half points to rally from a 17-0 deficit at Philadelphia.

Bryan Keys led Penn’s comeback, returning the second-half kickoff 62 yards to set up a field goal and scoring on a 68-yard run early in the fourth quarter to make it 31-17.

Penn changed quarterbacks in the second half, replacing Malcolm Glover with John Keller. Penn scored on 7 of its 10 second-half possessions.

The Quakers are 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League. Brown is 3-1 and 2-1.

Holy Cross 62, Dartmouth 23--Jeff Wiley passed for four touchdowns as the unbeaten Crusaders (5-0) scored on their first four possessions in a rout of the Big Green (1-3) at Hanover, N.H.

Gordie Lockbaum, Holy Cross’ all-purpose player, scored on a 62-yard pass play and a 25-yard run.

Lehigh 7, Colgate 6--Mark McGowan passed to Rich Curtis on a six-yard touchdown pass play in the third quarter to give Lehigh a Colonial League victory at Hamilton, N.Y. The touchdown was set up when Steve Banco recovered a fumble by Red Raider quarterback Gary Aurora at his six.

Lehigh is 3-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The Red Raiders (3-3, 1-2) scored midway through the first quarter on two-yard run by Kenny Gamble. But freshman Rory Crump missed the extra-point attempt to the left. Crump has converted only 7 of 12 PAT kicks this season.

Cornell 29, Harvard 17--Big Red quarterback Dave Dase hooked up with Shaun Hawkins on a 46-yard touchdown pass play on fourth down with 41 seconds left, and Jack Ryan returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown with 6 seconds remaining in an Ivy League victory over the Crimson at Ithaca, N.Y.

The win raises Cornell’s record to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League. Harvard dropped to 3-1 and 1-1.

Cornell trailed, 17-10, with six minutes left in the game, but a field goal and a safety brought Cornell within 17-15.

Yale 40, William & Mary 34--Tailback Mike Stewart caught an eight-yard pass from one touchdown, ran two yards for another and passed three yards to Dean Athanasia for a third with 23 seconds left to lead the Bulldogs (2-2) over the Indians (2-3) at New Haven, Conn.
