After Corso Made His Point, Buckeyes Made Several More

When Indiana upset Ohio State last Saturday, Michael Knisley of the Denver Post was reminded of the 1976 game when Lee Corso, now an ESPN analyst, was coaching the Hoosiers.

Indiana, which had lost 24 straight in the series, somehow managed to take a 7-6 lead in the second quarter.

Knisley: “It was a moment worth preserving, so Corso did. He had a photographer take a picture, with Corso pointing to the scoreboard in the background.

“Ohio State won the game, 47-7.”

Wrote Bob Baum of the Associated Press after Oregon’s back-to-back wins over Washington and USC: “No more jokes, please, about the Ducks quacking under pressure.”

Oregon tight end Tim Parker told Baum: “It used to be we’d go somewhere and they’d throw stale bread at us and have their duck calls.

“I think a new tradition is starting. People are starting to take notice of the Ducks. A little old Duck just beat up the big Husky and a Trojan horse.”

27 Years Ago Today: On Oct. 13, 1960, Bill Mazeroski led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run off Ralph Terry of the New York Yankees to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 10-9 victory in the seventh and deciding game of the World Series.

The Pirates won despite being outhit, .338 to .256. They were outscored, 55 to 27, and outhomered, 10 to 4.

Add 1960: Casey Stengel was fired after the Series, and the Yankees tried to soften the announcement by citing his age.

Said Stengel: “I’ll never make the mistake of being 70 again.”

Said New York Giants linebacker Harry Carson when asked how he’s managing during the strike: “My nine-year-old daughter, Asia, has a money management fund and when the strike began, she said, ‘Daddy, if you need any money, you can borrow it from me at 20% interest.’ She’s young, but she’s not stupid.”

Add Strike: Dave Duerson of the Chicago Bears says it’s a bad situation but he’s seen worse.

“The worst time of my life,” he said, “was being caught in the middle of a war between union and non-union drivers in Mazatlan, Mexico.”

Trivia Answer: Ingemar Johansson of Sweden, who failed to throw a punch in the first round, was disqualified in the second round for “not giving his best.”

Johansson went on to win the world heavyweight title. Sanders died in 1954 of a brain hemorrhage after being knocked out in his ninth professional fight.
