Master’s Palm Scores 10 Goals to Equal College Soccer Record

Mark Schubert of Master’s College is a demanding soccer coach.

A day after freshman Chris Palm scored 10 goals to tie a college record for most goals in a game, Schubert already was making plans.

“I’m looking for big things from Chris Palm,” Schubert said.

Palm played the most productive game of his life Monday in Master’s 24-0 rout of Loma Linda. He tied an Intercollegiate Soccer Assn. of America record that has stood for 21 years.

Master’s 24 goals also tied an ISAA mark for the third-most goals scored in a game. Master’s is 9-3, 5-1 in the NAIA District III going into today’s game at Cal Lutheran (2-7-2).

“People at the game realize that it could have been a lot worse,” Schubert said.

Schubert tried to limit the scoring by using seven players instead of 11 during the last 35 minutes of the game, but it didn’t work. Master’s took 67 shots on goal against Loma Linda, more than three times its average.

Palm sat out 20 of the 90 minutes Monday and still set a Master’s single-game scoring record. He broke Ron Inscho’s 1970 mark of seven goals. With 23 goals this season, Palm is also moving in on Don Menez’s record of 26 in a year.

Palm played just one season of soccer at Kamiakin High in Kennewick, Wash., which didn’t field a team until his senior year. He scored 50 goals in 15 games for Kamiakin and was the team’s most valuable player.
