Local News in Brief : Buena High Looks to Having Own Stadium

Share

Ventura’s Buena High School has shared a stadium with Ventura High for 26 years, but now may build one of its own.

The Ventura Unified School District Board of Education approved the concept of a stadium Monday night, although it did not earmark any funds for construction, which is expected to cost at least $1.5 million. The stadium would be built at the southwest corner of the campus, bordered on the south by the Santa Paula Freeway and on the west by Wake Forest Avenue.

Buena Principal Mike Shanahan acknowledged that neighbors fearing increased noise and traffic might object to the proposal. “But, when people buy a home near a high school, they know there will be lots of ‘kid-type’ activities,” he said.

The first in a series of fund-raisers is a walkathon set to start at 11 a.m. Oct. 24 at the Buena track. Featured celebrities will be Bob Wieland, who recently completed a 3 1/2-year walk across the United States on his hands, and George Allen, former head coach of the Washington Redskins and the Los Angeles Rams.
