COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Far West Roundup : Wild, Woolly Game Is Won by Wyoming

Greg Worker kicked a 35-yard field goal with six seconds to play at Laramie, Wyo., Saturday to give Wyoming a 37-35 victory over Houston.

The game-winning kick was set up by a 65-yard pass play from Scott Runyan to James Loving, who had a school-record 247 yards in receptions. The teams threw 116 passes.

Wyoming (5-2) got all its second-half points on Worker’s three field goals. He also made kicks of 32 and 37 yards. Chip Browndyke kicked field goals of 24 and 33 yards in the first quarter for Houston (1-4).

Wyoming took a 7-0 lead when Gordy Wood blocked a Simon Rodriquez punt and Chuck Kimbrough recovered in the end zone.

Houston quarterback Andre Ware was knocked out of the game in the first quarter with a broken arm, but Ed Powers came in and teamed with Brian Williams on a 70-yard touchdown play.

Wyoming, however, built a 28-14 halftime lead on a 6-yard touchdown run by Wood, and touchdown passes of 13 and 31 yards from Craig Burnett to Anthony Sargent.

A 60-yard touchdown pass play from Powers to Kimble Anders, and a 22-yard interception return for a score by Gary McGuire moved Houston into a 28-28 tie.

Powers connected on a 72-yard touchdown play to Paul Smith late in the fourth quarter to give Houston a 35-34 edge.

Wyoming had 499 yards passing to 409 for Houston.

Texas El Paso 38, Lamar 14--At El Paso, Tex., John Harvey rushed 152 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Miners (5-1) to their first five-win season since 1970.

Harvey accounted for 179 yards of total offense, and rambled for touchdown runs of 4, 15 and 2 yards as Lamar dropped to 3-4. Quarterback Pat Hegarty was almost as effective, completing 14 of 34 passes for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns.
