COLLEGE FOOTBALL : No. 6 LSU Takes Control in Second Half and Rolls to 34-9 Victory Over Kentucky

Sixth-ranked Louisiana State had to overcome a lack of motivation in the first half Saturday but posted a 34-9 Southeast Conference victory over Kentucky.

Harvey Williams rushed for two touchdowns as LSU, 6-0-1 overall and 3-0 in the SEC, limited Kentucky to three first-half field goals.

“Our opening drive was a thing of beauty,” Tiger Coach Mike Archer said of the 9-play, 69-yard drive capped by Williams’ 12-yard scoring run.

“After that, I think we went to sleep.”

The Tigers mustered one other touchdown before halftime on a four-yard scoring pass from Tommy Hodson to Rogie Magee to lead, 14-9, at intermission.

“At halftime we assessed the game,” said linebacker Ron Sancho, whose fumble recovery at the Wildcats’ four led to LSU’s second first-half touchdown. “We had to come out with a little more emotion.”

Williams’ second score, a two-yard run in the third quarter, gave LSU a 21-9 lead and put the Tigers in control.

The Tigers added a touchdown in the third quarter when backup tailback Eddie Fuller sprinted 45 yards.

David Browndyke added field goals of 47 and 27 yards in the fourth quarter to round out the Tiger scoring.

Kentucky (4-2 and 1-1) moved the ball well but could not crack the LSU goal line, scoring all its points on field goals of 45, 29 and 41 yards by Joey Worley.

“I thought we executed well in the first half,” said Kentucky tailback Mark Higgs, who was limited to 61 yards in 14 carries, well below his 136-yard average. “When we came out in the second half, we were a totally different team.”

Hodson completed 17 of 30 attempts for 222 yards, the sixth straight game in which he has thrown for more than 200 yards.

Seven of those receptions for 99 yards were on passes to Wendell Davis, who became LSU’s all-time career receiver. Davis has 158 receptions, breaking the record of 152 set by Eric Martin, now with the New Orleans Saints.

Williams had 63 yards rushing and Fuller had 67 for LSU.
