PGA champion Larry Nelson came from six shots off the pace with a final-round 63 for a one-stroke victory Sunday in the Walt Disney World tournament at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

“Maybe my best competitive round,” Nelson said. “Certainly my best competitive round on Sunday. To shoot 63 when you have to do it, that’s really something.”

Nelson had birdies on the final two holes on the Magnolia course at Walt Disney World to finish with an 18-under-par total of 268.

The victory was the ninth of Nelson’s career and second this season. It was worth $108,000 and pushed his earnings for the year to $437,492, by far the best season of his 14-year career.

Morris Hatalsky and Mark O’Meara tied for second at 269. Hatalsky had a closing-round 67 and O’Meara shot 69.

Third-round leader Steve Pate was next at 270 after a 71. At 271 were Mike Reid, Mac O’Grady and South African David Frost. Reid closed with a 67, O’Grady shot 68 and Frost 69.

Britain’s Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam advanced to the final of the rain-delayed World Match Play Championship at Wentworth, England.

Woosnam ended Severiano Ballesteros’ hopes of winning a record-tying fifth match-play title when he held off the fast-finishing Spaniard for a 1-up victory in the semifinals. Lyle needed three extra holes to beat South African Mark McNulty.

The final will be held today because of bad weather that disrupted the early rounds.

Al Geiberger scored a birdie on the second playoff hole to beat Jim Ferree and win the Seniors International tournament at Harbour Town Golf Links at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Geiberger and Ferree finished 54 holes at 4-under-par 209. Geiberger shot a final-round 71 and Ferree had a 68, finishing with two birdies to force the playoff.

Both golfers parred the first playoff hole. On the second playoff hole--the 363-yard No. 16--Geiberger hit a 9-iron close to the hole with his second shot. Ferree missed the green and was forced to try to chip in for a birdie. Instead, Ferree chipped five feet past the hole and Geiberger made the short putt to win the tournament.

Geiberger earned $37,500 with his second Senior Tour victory.,

Jay Lumpkin of Amelia Island, Fla., shot a final-round 69 to win the $335,000 PGA Club Pro Championship at La Quinta. Lumpkin, 30, carded six birdies and three bogeys over the 6,800-yard, par-72 PGA West Stadium course for a 72-hole total of 279.

With the victory, worth $30,000, Lumpkin earned a berth in next year’s PGA Championship and the World Series of Golf.
