Police have arrested a Los Angeles man in connection with the weekend death of a Southeast San Diego resident, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Larry Stewart, 28, was booked Monday on suspicion of murder after homicide investigators obtained a search warrant for a residence in the 4200 block of Wightman Street, where they arrested Stewart, Robinson said.

The victim, Wilbert C. Ward, 65, died Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in UC San Diego Medical Center, after he was struck in the head with a ceramic flower pot early Sunday morning.

Robinson said patrol officers were called to an alley off National Avenue early Sunday and found the victim lying in a yard, suffering from head injuries.

Witnesses told police that Ward had been visiting friends at a residence in the 900 block of S. 38th Street, when an argument took place.

Ward and a female companion left the home and went to his car, which was parked in the alley. The suspect struck the woman, then hit Ward with a flower pot before fleeing with another person on a red motorcycle, Robinson said.

Cherryll P. Morris, also of Southeast San Diego, suffered minor injuries.
