Sabona Outruns Aberuschka in the Stretch to Win Santa Anita Feature Race on Turf
Sabona, ridden by Chris McCarron, overtook Aberuschka in the final strides to win Wednesday’s $65,900 feature race of the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita.
Sabona finished a head in front of Aberuschka, the only mare in the eight-horse field. Deputy Governor was third, a half-length behind.
The winner was clocked in 1:14 4/5 for about 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf course.
Sent off as the favorite by the crowd of 19,014, Sabona paid $7.80, $4.40 and $2.80. Aberuschka, ridden by Pat Valenzuela, paid $4.20 and $3. Deputy Governor, with Eddie Delahoussaye aboard, paid $3.
Sabona, unhurried early, began moving toward the front entering the stretch, then pulled slightly ahead of Aberuschka and Deputy Governor as they neared the finish.
After holding the lead until early in the stretch, pacesetter Bold Brawley faded to last.
Sabona, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred horse, earned $38,900 for owner Sir Ernest Harrison.
