Venice’s Jerry Turner failed to hold on to Eddie Soto’s pass in the end zone on a 2-point conversion attempt in the third quarter that would have tied the score. The Gondoliers had pulled to within 14-12 on Soto’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Chris Cook. . . . Grant quarterback Negil Carmichael’s 1-yard sneak had given Grant a 14-6 lead earlier in the quarter. . . . The Lancers took the lead for good 1:32 before halftime on Carmichael’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Matt Taylor. The score culminated a 13-play, 86-yard drive. . . . Venice opened the scoring on Turner’s 2-yard second-quarter run, 6 plays after David Sands recovered Ray Palmer’s fumble at Grant’s 13-yard line.
KEY PLAYERS
Mark Taylor (G) was the game’s leading rusher and receiver, running for 80 yards on 15 carries and catching 3 passes for 33 yards and 1 touchdown. . . . Ray Palmer (G) added 67 yards on 9 carries. . . . Allan Cowley (G), who entered the game as the Lancers’ leading rusher, suffered a knee injury on the opening play from scrimmage and had to be taken away in an ambulance. There was no word on his condition.
