Texas Christian Coach Jim Wacker liked everything he saw in his Horned Frogs’ 24-0 victory over Baylor Saturday in a Southwest Conference game at Waco, Tex.

“The big play on offense was TJ’s run,” he said of Tony Jeffery’s touchdown dash that accounted for 80 of his 174 yards.

“The defense had about 100 big plays,” Wacker said.

The Horned Frogs picked up their first SWC shutout since 1967 in improving their record to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Running back Tony Darthard added 101 rushing yards for TCU. Jeffery picked up his 174 yards in 19 carries in three quarters.

Baylor (5-3 and 3-2) was shut out for the first time since 1979, a streak of 89 games.

TCU’s first score came on a 3-play, 46-yard drive after a 13-yard punt by Baylor’s Pete Rutter. Quarterback David Rascoe started the drive with a 27-yard run around right end and ended it with 14-yard run into the end zone.

Jeffrey’s 80-yard run came in the second quarter and he also scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter to conclude the scoring.

Playing in front of a homecoming crowd of 36,138, Baylor managed only 106 yards in total offense, including 16 net yards in 34 rushing attempts.

Arkansas 21, Houston 17--Quinn Grovey came off the bench in the fourth quarter and threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to fellow freshman Derek Russell as the Razorbacks struggled past the Cougars at Fayetteville, Ark.

Arkansas, the preseason favorite in the SWC, is 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Houston is 1-5 and 0-3.

Houston built a 17-14 lead behind quarterback David Dacus, who started the season opener but hadn’t played since. He was behind Andre Ware, who broke his arm last week, and Ed Powers, who started Saturday but was lifted after the Cougars failed to make a first down on their first two possessions.

Grovey came in for the game-winning touchdown play when Greg Thomas briefly went to the sideline. Russell’s touchdown, which came with 9:32 left, ended a 66-yard drive.

Texas A&M; 34, Rice 21--Freshman tailback Darren Lewis ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and freshman quarterback Bucky Richardson rushed for 137 yards, including 56 for a touchdown, to lead the Aggies over the Owls at Houston.

Richardson was one of three quarterbacks used by the Aggies (5-2 and 3-1).

The Aggies led, 20-13, at halftime and stretched their lead with two second-half scores, both involving Lewis. His 5-yard run capped an 84-yard drive with 1:49 left in the third quarter and, with 9:40 remaining in the game, Lewis took a pitch in the backfield and connected with Gary Oliver on a 37-yard touchdown pass play.

Lewis scored on a 13-yard run in the first half against Rice (2-6 and 0-4).

Texas Tech 42, Tulsa 7--Fullback Isaac Garnett scored three touchdowns as the Red Raiders coasted to a nonconference victory over the road-weary Golden Hurricane at Lubbock, Tex.

Garnett scored on runs of 2, 18 and 3 yards as the Red Raiders (5-3) moved back into bowl consideration.
