Don McPherson threw four touchdown passes to receiver Tommy Kane as ninth-ranked Syracuse buried Colgate, 52-6, Saturday at Syracuse, N.Y., in a game that ended a series dating back to 1891.

It was the 14th straight time since 1950 that Syracuse (7-0) has beaten Colgate (4-4), a Division I-AA school from nearby Hamilton, N.Y. Because the series has become so lopsided, Syracuse will no longer play Colgate.

McPherson connected with Kane on touchdown pass plays of 18, 44, 42 and 43 yards. McPherson also caught a 9-yard scoring pass from tailback Robert Drummond.

McPherson became the Orangemen’s all-time total offense leader, passing quarterback Bill Hurley, who amassed 5,949 yards between 1975-1979. McPherson completed 10 of 11 passes Saturday for 244 yards and added another 22 yards rushing and receiving to finish the game with 6,100 career yards.

Pitt 10, Navy 6--Craig Heyward, the Panthers’ 260-pound tailback, scored the only touchdown and ran for more than 100 yards for the seventh straight game, gaining 140 in 37 carries, at Annapolis, Md.

Pitt (5-2) scored the first time it got the ball, on a 67-yard drive, with Heyward scoring from the one. The Midshipmen are 1-6.

Rutgers 27, Army 14--Henry Henderson rushed for 118 yards in 14 carries and scored a touchdown as the Scarlet Knights (5-2) beat the Cadets (2-5) at West Point, N.Y.

Army, which lost starting quarterback Tory Crawford with a knee injury on Oct. 3 and third-stringer Bryan Babb to a non-football medical problem, started backup Mark Mooney, a former Temple City High star who was suffering from a toe injury. Mooney suffered a separated right shoulder on Army’s first drive of the game Saturday. Although Mooney later returned, Army was forced to use fourth-stringer Morrell Savoy.

West Virginia 37, Boston College 16--Wide receiver John Talley ran for 2 second-half touchdowns, one on a 10-yard reverse and the other on a 1-yard run after taking a pitchout, and Charlie Baumann kicked 3 field goals as the Mountaineers (4-3) beat the Golden Eagles (4-4) at Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Bucknell 62, Columbia 20--Jim Given threw three first-half touchdowns as the Bison raced to a 49-6 halftime lead and went on to rout the Lions at Lewisburg, Pa., extending Columbia’s major-college record losing streak to 37 games.

Columbia, 0-6 this season, misfired on an attempted onside kick to start the game, and it was all downhill after that. Columbia’s Terry Brown set a school single-game kickoff return yardage record with 220 in 9 runbacks.

Holy Cross 41, Brown 0--Multi-purpose back Gordie Lockbaum scored three touchdowns, and quarterback Jeff Wiley set two school records as the undefeated Crusaders shut out the Bruins in a nonconference game at Worcester, Mass.

Lockbaum had rushing touchdowns of 1, 2, and 3 yards among his total of 41 yards. He also had 9 receptions for 122 yards.

Wiley, meanwhile, completed 27 of 35 passes for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns to help the Crusaders, ranked No. 1 in Division I-AA, improve to 7-0. Wiley set Holy Cross career records for total yardage with 5,746 and passing attempts with 699.

Brown, tied for the Ivy League lead with a 3-1 record, fell to 5-2 overall.

Harvard 24, Princeton 19--At Cambridge, Mass., junior Tom Yohe threw for 2 touchdowns on plays covering 49 and 40 yards, and defensive tackle Greg Williams recovered a Tiger fumble at the Harvard 19 with two minutes left as the Crimson moved into a tie for the Ivy League lead.

Ryan completed 20 of 31 passes for 216 yards as Yale won its third straight game, improving to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League.

With its second straight loss, Penn, 2-4 overall, hurt its chances for a sixth straight Ivy League title, falling to 2-2 in the league.
