COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Southland Roundup : Reserves Lead UCSB to 55-0 Win

Reserve quarterbacks Mike Curtius and Steve Armstrong combined for 347 yards passing and 5 touchdown passes Saturday to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 55-0 rout of Pomona-Pitzer in a nonconference game at Pomona.

Curtius completed 6 of 7 passes for 201 yards, including touchdown passes of 23 and 75 yards. He also scored Santa Barbara’s first touchdown on a one-yard run. He alternated at quarterback with Armstrong, who completed 11 of 18 passes for 146 yards, with touchdown passes of 34, 1 and 27 yards.

Curtius and Armstrong were playing in place of Paul Wright, who has a separated shoulder. Santa Barbara (6-1) finished with a school-record 639 total yards, including 292 yards rushing. Pomona-Pitzer is 1-5.

CS Sacramento 21, Cal Poly SLO 13--Drew Wyant threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Hornets upset the previously unbeaten Mustangs in a Western Football Conference game at Sacramento.

Wyant completed only 2 of 9 passes, but one of his completions went for a 33-yard touchdown to give Sacramento (3-4 overall, 1-2 in conference) a 14-10 halftime lead. In the third quarter, after San Luis Obispo (6-1, 2-1) closed within 14-13, Wyant ran four yards for a touchdown to give the Hornets a 21-13 lead.

Portland State 40, Cal Lutheran 7--Curtis Delgardo ran for 180 yards in 9 carries, including touchdown runs of 29 and 58 yards, to lead the Vikings over the Kingsmen in a WFC game at Portland, Ore.

The win gave Portland State (6-1-1 overall, 3-0 in conference) a share of the conference lead. Cal Lutheran (2-5, 0-5) has lost 11 straight conference games.

CS Northridge 56, Southern Utah 36--Rob Huffman completed 16 of 21 passes for 261 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Matadors over the Thunderbirds in a WFC game at Northridge. Southern Utah is 4-4 overall, 1-3 in conference. Northridge (5-2 overall, 2-1 in conference) hosts first-place Santa Clara next week.

Occidental 28, Redlands 0--Mike Sandlin ran for 164 yards and 2 touchdowns in 29 carries to lead the Tigers over the Bulldogs in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Redlands. Occidental is 3-2-1 overall, 2-1 in conference. Redlands fell to 1-5 and 1-2.

Whittier 17, La Verne 12--Rod Pesak returned an interception 78 yards for a touchdown and Ramon Juarez threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Ian Yates to lead the Poets to the win in an SCIAC game at Whittier. La Verne is 1-5 overall, 1-2 in conference. Whittier is 4-3, 2-1.

U. San Diego 23, Claremont-Mudd 7--The Toreros scored touchdowns on their first two possessions and went on to defeat the Stags in a nonconference game at Claremont.

Brendan Murphy threw a 72-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Mansukhani on the game’s first play, and San Diego made it 14-0 later in the first quarter on a four-yard run by Ty Barksdale.

St. Mary’s 51, Azusa Pacific 17--Tight end John Braff caught six passes, including two for touchdowns, and Brian Richey came off the bench to throw two touchdown passes as the Gaels defeated the Cougars in a nonconference game at Moraga, Calif. Azusa Pacific is 2-5, and St. Mary’s is 5-2.
